Just as the title says... for what reason, emergency or otherwise, would one need to jettison cm's?

Just as the title says... for what reason, emergency or otherwise, would one need to jettison cm's?
I'm thinking maybe a flare or chaff charge catching on fire or malfunctioning. Best to be able to jettison it than cause fire in flight.
