Not sure about this, as I have just recently figured out keeping my plane headed in the right general direction. Is it better to fly lower than your target so he can't notch (I think that's the term) you or is it better to fly higher so you have longer range? I realize that tactics may change depending on the situation, but is there a general rule?

Depends on the situation and a lot of factors, of course...

But why not combine both?

Go high and fast for the launch, then drop down below your target to keep the lock.
