peachpossum Posted February 5, 2018 Posted February 5, 2018 Hi, I've noticed that video recording and screen shots using nVidia Shadowplay show a distinct haze or low contrast which does not resemble in game graphics. As an experiment, I played a recording I made with nVidia ShadowPlay while running a hardware monitor overlay using MSI Afterburner. I then replayed the video recording in full screen using VLC and re-positioned the still active MSI AB hardware monitor overlay below the original from the video recording. It's very obvious in this example that something is significantly reducing the contrast in the recordings. I've not noticed this in previous versions of DCS, but unfortunately I cannot run this experiment on the previous versions now that they've been deleted after the update to DCS OB 2.5. Here is an example of the screenshot, the lower MSI monitor looks correct, everything else has lower contrast and/or some haziness; Since this does not appear in the DCS 2.5 game, it's not a big deal. It just seems odd that recordings are lower contrast/hazy. Windows 11 Pro 64-bit i7-14700k 3.4 GHz, 64 GB DDR5-6000 MHz, Samsung 980 pro NVMe for DCS drive. ASUS 790-F ROG Strix Gaming Wifi LGA 1700, nVidia RTX 4090, Dell Ultrasharp U3818DW 3840x1600 60Hz.
dedde01 Posted February 5, 2018 Posted February 5, 2018 +1 Though I haven't checked if it does the same in other occasions or only in DCS. If it isn't a DCS problem, I can guess that it's because maybe Shadowplay records videos at low BPC (maybe 8bpc) but I am not sure of this. I shall do more researches:cry: SILVER 11 | Dedde DCS MODULES: A-10C; F-15C ; M2000C; AV-8B N/A; F/A-18C; SA342; CA. Devrim Posted February 5, 2018 Posted February 5, 2018 Hi. I use ShadowPlay to record multiplayer moments but I didn't realize any difference between in-game screen and video output. I used to see what you say when I use Fraps in older versions of DCS, but since DCS v1.2 I've been recording ingame videos. No problem here. (MSI nVidia GTX970) Do you see the difference between the 2 graphics in the pic above? It's like a lighter green (that's why I thought it was a bpc problem) than the normal graphic. I have the same effect on the radar of the f15 or the radar of the mirage for example. Do you have Dynamic Range turned on in the NVIDIA video panel? peachpossum Posted February 6, 2018 Author Posted February 6, 2018 (edited) Hi Dedde01, Not sure if your question was directed at me. Do you have Dynamic Range turned on in the NVIDIA video panel? I don't see that as an option in my nVidia Control Panel. Maybe you meant the nVidia Shadowplay options? I'll have to check later and I'll try to run the same experiment in Arma III or Rise of Flight to see if the problem happens in those games which would suggest that Shadowplay is the culprit. Thanks. Devrim Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 Do you see the difference between the 2 graphics in the pic above?...Oh. That's another problem. I don't see any picture in this page. :D ...Do you have Dynamic Range turned on in the NVIDIA video panel?I don't see that setting either. Only DSR which is not related this subject I guess. dedde01 Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 No my question was directed to Devrim, because he can't see the differences when he records. Dynamic range is an option (that should be enabled every time if you new gen monitor, with HDMI or DP). AFAIK it should set your images to have millions of colors by setting the BPC (bits per color) to 16 or 32 (idk exactly). I know that an anologic port (like the VGA one) can receive only 8 bpc images (Idk if I am wrong). My thought is that DCS uses more than 8bpc (like every game) but shadowplay can record only in that scale so it loses a lot of color shades. Maybe if he can't see the difference is because his image is set to use 8bpc codec and so he doesn't see the difference, but honestly man, IDK, even because I don't think shadowplay records at only 8bpc... just guessing. The first thing I can do is to test it when I get home.:smilewink: SILVER 11 | Dedde DCS MODULES: A-10C; F-15C ; M2000C; AV-8B N/A; F/A-18C; SA342; CA. dedde01 Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 Well, The videos are not in high res so you shouldn't have that kind of problems because we are speaking about very slim lines that lose sheen near the borders so if the videos are not recorded at least at 1080p you can't notice the differences SILVER 11 | Dedde DCS MODULES: A-10C; F-15C ; M2000C; AV-8B N/A; F/A-18C; SA342; CA.
