Hugin and Munin Soaring: How and Why

Sorry to post another one of these.

**SPOILER ALERT**

The last mission of the mini-campaign, Hugin and Munin soaring, requires the player to intercept incoming bombers. I've carefully used the AWACS BRAA calls while in IR-RB mode with my radar in A0 with the dish angled upwards.

I have some questions:

1. Am I correct in taking the AWACS calls as being in metres? The higher target's altitude is given as "21 000" and the lower as low as "13 000". The Viggen's service sealing is 20 000 m, so climbing to co-altitude with the higher target would exceed that if the calls are in meters.

13 000 m can be done, but it's still one hell of a climb. I did get up to about 12 000 m (I think) and was visually scanning the area directly in front and above me but I couldn't see any trace of the target.

2. Does selecting weapon mode "IR-RB" put the radar into a2a mode? I've been selecting IR-RB in the belief that doing so will activate air-to-air mode and angling the dish upwards, hoping to detect these targets above me, but it looks like the radar stops scanning. Any ideas what is happening and how I can keep the radar scanning?

3. Why are AJS-37 Viggens drawing interceptor duty anyway? Up until now I have enjoyed other missions in the mini-campaign challenging the limits of my knowledge, but those were all within the bounds of the airframe's intended use. Were AJS ever actually used as interceptors? Are the AJS air-to-air capabilities sufficient for anything beyond self-defence?

If anyone can answer these questions or suggest easy ways to complete this mission I'm all eyes.

I treat AWACS calls as feet and miles.

In this mission I never used radar in radar search but as ranging radar when looking at a target.

Not sure AA radar works though as I would expect a distance line when pressing T1 manually pointing at a target (I get the flashing E rather).

(Following "Rb 24/74 Checklist" in manual doesn't work for me at least)

Going only on BRAA calls I usually locate the bombers visually and point my nose at them until sidewinder says he's good to go.

Regarding the interceptor duty the attack Viggen was indeed intended to do second line intercept missions on high altitude bombers having no escorts using Sidewinders and even Rb 05. Hence the J in AJ and AJS (AJ is primary Attack and secondary Interceptor and as such the later JA 37 also had a secondary attack profile, with ARAK only IIRC).

To manage this mission, go visual and use your wingman (he killed both bombers for me once when I totally missed the merge)

Thanks once again theOden. Given the cautions about the "J" capacity in the AJS being exaggerated I'd all but dismissed the fighter functions, thanks for explaining that they do still have real-world relevance.

Locking aerial targets with the radar works well for me, just tested again.

Flashing E sounds like you were in the wrong weapon or master mode.

Make sure you follow the AKAN AA checklist:

- Weapon selector AKAN JAKT.

- Sight mode selector to target wingspan.

- Master mode ANF.

- Radar mode selector A1 or A2.

- Trigger UNSAFE.

- Place reticule over target. Lock target by pulling radar trigger to second detent TV.

- Pull trigger when either distance line reaches event markers or wingspan markers envelop the target.

Or RB 24J/74, depending on your weapon:

- Weapon selector IR-RB (or IR missile fast select)

- Sight mode selector to target wingspan

- Master mode ANF

- Radar mode A1 or A2

- Aim at target visually

- Lock target by pulling radar trigger to second detent TV

- Trigger UNSAFE

- Uncage seeker for maneuvering targets

- Fire on steady tone when distance line is inside markers or wing span envelops the target

That's interesting Zabuza, are you on 1.5.8?

Edit:

Ok, just another bug I guess.

If I click in cockpit it works but using HOTAS to select ATK and IR-RB will result in flashing E.

Really really getting tired on this.

How to even get a mini campaign for viggen? Do you mean nttr training campaign?

No, this is the mini-campaign mentioned in the product description.

I originally got it here, but I believe this has been superseded by one that is adjusted for 2.5, and may have been redone before that as well. I have no idea if or where the updated mini-campaign can be found. This might do damage in/to the current DCS World build, so install at your own risk. If you do decide to install it, I strongly suggest you at least wait to launch the campaign until you've run the updater with this mini-campaign installed.

It seems like the other Viggen campaigns are approaching release, so you may be better advised to wait for those.
