Here is a nice shot of two AV-8Bs conducting a reverse landing on LHA-6 USS America, that is clearly underway.

I've asked a question on there regarding the ships speed and speculate this;

That a reverse landing is conducted when either one or a combination of the following conditions are met;

  • Wind on stern is greater than the ship can overcome, whether that's by performance limitation, or not wishing to reach a waypoint too soon, or sail into foul weather too soon etc.
  • Turning into wind is decided against, for whatever reason; say time constraints et al.

It was interesting to see, and am pondering about the procedure of such a landing, what the speed of the vessel is, relative wind-speed on deck etc.

I have also noted that actual AV-8B landings on deck are not as rigidly square as some DCS specific tutorials, namely the manoeuvre abeam to over-the-deck transition appears to flown in a slightly more rounded-off fashion, rather than right-angles.

Below is a VTOL landing by day, though I wonder, what does this look like with a reverse vertical landing?

To answer my own question, this is outlined in the;

V/STOL SHIPBOARD AND LANDING SIGNAL OFFICER NATOPS MANUAL

Excerpt from CHAPTER 10; Alternate Approaches;

10.1.1 Bow-to-Stern Recovery.

1. Normally used when a significant tailwind exists.

2. Fly down the starboard side of the ship at 800 feet on a heading opposite the BRC.

3. Break right past the stern.

4. Utilize the standard Case 1 procedures with a right-hand pattern.

5. The bow-to-stern recovery is depicted in

Figure 10-1.
