A/G Gun Performance?

For familiarization I use a mission where I have to destroy some trucks and an APC (BTR-80). I had used that same setup to train A/G gun use for other planes like FW-190, A-10C, AV-8B.

With the FW-190 the APC was a bit difficult, but with the modern planes it was a piece of cake.

Now with the F/A-18 the trucks are still relatively easy. But I find the APC almost impossible to kill with the gun.

My last attempt: I made sure the center point of the CCIP pipper was well on target and well within range before I fired, but with about 300 rounds fired I had only 15 hits and only the last two finally killed the APC.

 

Is the the gun realistic in A/G use? I have a feeling that it strays too much but of course I cannot prove it.

Other point: I saw in the debrief that it fired only HEI shells. I think AP shells might have been more effective. But I see no way in the ME to determine what kind of rounds are loaded. The A-10C carries a combat mix; and I would expect a fighter with ground attack capability to have that option too?
