DDSSTT Posted June 14, 2018 Posted June 14, 2018 Hey fellow Pilots, this was my first attempt at evening/night traps and could use some pointers. I am still having trouble with throttle creep/velocity vector sinking/climbing... I fly VR only, it is about an hour long with a little pause in the middle to kill time so i could trap when it got darker and to enjoy the setting sun visuals and wing flex :pilotfly:... I wasn't going to post this but I want to get better. Link to my track: https://drive.google.com/open?id=19gjVM0EksrjSmHj0FtAbItQQWTVI1JbD [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] http://www.csg-2.net/
David OC Posted June 14, 2018 Posted June 14, 2018 Not at home right now DDSSTT, It's normal to be moving the throttles a lot and the descent and climb velocity to be changing, there is no perfect position it's a balancing act, especially when coming down out of the groove down the glide slope for landing. Landing this way how the Navy does, is more like landing the Huey at 135 knots and using the collective lever LOL.;) If you need more info about how and why the USN land aircraft this way. I learned how to deal with power more or less but the biggest issue for me is picking up the line up cues. Surprisingly I can spot the ball quite early... fuzzy yellow blob between 2 green blobs. For Case I the carrier wake is more useful to me then barely visible landing area lines. The sun glare from the Cat rails and JBD's doesn't help either. I've done some bolter/wave-off pattern work at night and it's basically the same story. I can see the wake, no drop lights or landing area centerline. I can barely see them when in close. The ball is visible tho'
captflyby Posted June 14, 2018 Posted June 14, 2018 One additional item...at night you are basically flying instruments. If you set up the TACAN at 35X, and set your inbound course of 040 deg on your HSI, you should see a small arrow on your HUD. Fly it for guidance to the carrier. It will NOT give you vertical guidance, but WILL help you line up on the center line of the box. Arrow off to the right side, steer right. Off to left, steer left. Keep the arrow centered and you'll fly straight down the box.
