1060 and Rift in 2.5?

Anyone got reasonable results with VR in 2.5 on a GTX 1060 (6GB)?

 

If so - could you please post your settings and maybe your CPU spec.

I'm only using VR in earlier versions currently and having to use the monitor for 2.5 which is so disappointing a thing to have to do.

 

It's not the performance - that's fine in free flight (not tested combat yet but going from 2 OA it won't be pretty) it's how the sim looks.

 

On my monitor in 2D it looks great - in my Rift it looks awful. Lowered gamma to 1.7 as 1.6 was too dark - but even 1.7 there is a vast difference between lights and darks in the VCs and it doesn't look good. The colours of the terrain in Caucasus and Normandy are pretty bad, too.

 

The worst thing is that I recently upgraded my PC graphics, cpu, mobo and RAM based on the recommended specs for the upcoming 2.5 even though my previous sytem was working fine in VR - then after 2.5 came out the specs changed and I'm just not rich enough to throw away the stuff I bought and buy better kit instead.

 

So I'm just a bit frustrated

I got my Rift a month ago and I am still struggling for finding a decent 45 fps configuration.

 

However, it doesnt´matter how many 1080ti you buy, current VR won´t match 2D flat monitor visuals.

It doesn't need to match 2D "visuals" - it kills off 2D and buries it 10ft deep as far as immersion goes.

 

2D can never give what VR does.

Well I have to admit I had a big surprise in DCS 2.5 this evening. I decided to have another go and set the 'system' options to VR - didn't change a thing, just clicked the VR button. Gamma is set at 1.7

 

I ran the Hornet start-up tutorial first - that went fine. I then jumped into a Hornet mission (Hornet - Nalchik Strike) and it ran flawlessly in VR. Okay, so the scenery looked like LOMAC, but that doesn't overly bother me in a combat mission.

I didn't take it as far as the combat, though, as I've no idea what I'm doing in the Hornet, as yet.

 

I then jumped into an Su-25T mission (PeteTrainingSu25T). Again, the scenery was a bit plain looking - and the AI models were all a bit naff, mostly due to gamma, shimmering and jaggies. The Mirage 2000C did look great, though, despite this.

 

I counted 16 AI aircraft airborne, all in the Kutaisi/Kobuleti area, with unknown number of ground units also active and yet the performance was still well within the acceptable range. No stutters, freezes or the like (with the exception of when I pressed the Print Screen key - a fraction of a second's pause each time).

 

So - there is hope yet! :)

 

That's an i5 4690k @ 4.3GHz with 16GB 2133 RAM and the GTX 1060 6GB - oh, and this all running from an old SATA 1 hard drive! Load times were no worse than they have been over the last couple of years with 1.5

 

The screens look a little better, of course, as they are from the monitor - but not far off:
