velniux Posted May 11, 2007 Posted May 11, 2007 Hi there ! While I am not completely new to LOMAC, I just recently rediscovered it, purchased FC and now I am pretty happy. There is just one issue that bugs me: I run windows xp on my home PC, with an admin account to install stuff etc., and a restricted user account for the internet and all the rest, including games. I installed FC with the admin account, let starforce activate the software and everything was fine. Now when I want to launch FC with my restricted every day account, and the starforce activation screen appears again. Apparently this means that teh starforce activation is valid for one user account only, and not for the entire machine including all user accounts ? This is bad, as I do not want to activate it a second time, thus losing one of the 4 remaining activations... Now I usually launch FC via "run as" by chosing the account FC was installed with, and entering the password. While I'd do anything to play FC, with time it does get a little annoying. With any other software which cannot be launched without admin rights, it is usually sufficient to grant write access to the relevfant directories on the hdd. In this case, however, starforce is likely to make this easy solution impossible... Does anyone know of a workaround, allowing me to launch FC in a restricted account without all the hassle ? Or is a reactivation unavoidable ? Thanks for your help! velniux
Kuky Posted May 11, 2007 Posted May 11, 2007 Trying doing this and see if it works (it's an idea I just got, but I havne't tested if this works so you might try it out) start windows as administrator save lockon registry (use ED utility for this) restart/or change user and logg in as your normal account add saved registry again to your normal account PC specs: Windows 11 Home | Asus TUF Gaming B850-Plus WiFi | AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D + LC 360 AIO | MSI RTX 5090 LC 360 AIO | 55" Samsung Odyssey Gen 2 | 64GB PC5-48000 DDR5 | 1TB M2 SSD for OS | 2TB M2 SSD for DCS | NZXT C1000 Gold ATX 3.1 1000W | TM Cougar Throttle, Floor Mounted MongoosT-50 Grip on TM Cougar board, MFG Crosswind, Track IR
velniux Posted May 11, 2007 Author Posted May 11, 2007 Thanks for pointing this out, I haven't even thought of their tool before :) I just tried this out, and the starforce issue is definitely solved now. However, getting FC to run w/o admin rights is actually the harder part. I thought it would be the opposite... After clicking on the icon I see an error message "abnormal program termination". Maybe I'll find a workaround myself, maybe not. I just wish it ran without admin rights by default !! (hint, just in case a developer reads this...) Anyway, thanks again ! :)
Kuky Posted May 11, 2007 Posted May 11, 2007 Why don't you just install LockOn as normal account instead of Administrator? PoleCat Posted May 11, 2007 Posted May 11, 2007 For a more advanced approach you might consider using the "run as" command to set up the program only to run under elevated privlidges while under a limited account. Works very well for this purpose. Look it up. Out http://www.104thphoenix.com/
velniux Posted May 11, 2007 Author Posted May 11, 2007 I solved the problem. Using "process monitor" I tracked down the files that lockon wanted to access while not being allowed to (due to the restricted rights). I thought I had granted full access to the LOCKON directory to the user group, but apparently a few files had been left out. But nothing impossible to fix ;) Anyway it works like a charm now, no more "run as" and entering passwords...
