Displays turn darker when on

After turning on, the MFDs loose all shadows/reflections and turn almost pitch black. Unless the Navy is using some sort of magic dark light to power these screens, that's physically not possible.

That's because a black background is part of the 'displayed image' here. Not sure if there is any harm in just making that transparent, other than the screen being hard to read in certain lighting conditions.
