Does the Bar Alt AP mode depend on Recce Event button pressed?

I noticed that when turning on the HMD, and then disabling its display by pressing the Recce button once on the grip, the Bar Alt AP mode doesn't seem to engage. However, after pressing Recce again, it displays the ":" symbol and seems to engage correctly.

 

Is that expected behavior or a glitch? If expected, can someone elaborate on the link between the two?

I tried to recreate this a few times without success since I posted this originally, so this must have been a one-off. If this happens again, I will be sure to save the track and attach it here.
