OnlyforDCS Posted December 27, 2018 Posted December 27, 2018 (edited) Yeah, probably like most people I will start out my career in the Tomcat flying in the front seat. But at some point I will definitely want to learn all the ins and outs of becoming a RIO Master :) With the limited autopilot functionality when switching to the backseat I was wondering how training as a RIO will be handled within the simulation? I understand that at early access there will be a very limited ammount of missions released with the module. So my questions are will we get RIO training missions at some point during EA? How will those work? Will they be missions and scenarios where you fly from the backseat from start-up to landing, or will you have to switch to the backseat to progress in the scenario? Will they be video missions, or interactive tutorials? I mean, I guess there will be a lot of people jumping in the back seat with a friend online and just "winging" it with the help of a manual, but it would be kind of cool to know if we might get some training missions at some point. Thanks in advance for any info on this! Cheers. WindyTX Posted December 27, 2018 Posted December 27, 2018 I am hoping that there is an F14 Pilot around the forum who will be willing to pipe up and give us a few videos (On the Sqn its the Pilots that train the RIO's ) At a minimum I am planning on doing some training for the members of the 16 AGR but it is based of how we operated the Tornado F3 so purely A2A. At least tho we will have a set of SOP's to help with Crew co-ordination and who has responsibility for what and who has the radios etc If we don't end up with a F14 pilots perspective I will happily publish some videos, once we have a couple of crews up to speed , may take a little while tho. Victory205 Posted December 27, 2018 Posted December 27, 2018 RIO’s train RIO’s. Fly Pretty, anyone can Fly Safe.
WindyTX Posted December 27, 2018 Posted December 27, 2018 Hmm in that case we do it very differently in the RAF as I spent a lot of time training back seaters in the F3 as I was the only one there to do it . Now I was referring to training on a Frontline Sqn so maybe I should have been a bit clearer. Now a RIO as you would call him would look at the tape afterwards but for instruction in the Air if he is screwing something up it was always better to fix it there and then and have another go on the spot than wait till you saw the tape later. Pilots flew the RIO candidates around and were the primary instructor for the hop as Rios flew with pilot candidates. They were not experts per se, but knew the info needed for an up as I understand it. Salute Punk [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
OnlyforDCS Posted December 28, 2018 Author Posted December 28, 2018 (edited) Thanks for the replies but can we keep it closer to the topic please? The question is regarding RIO training within the simulation. Sure you can learn a lot from other people online, especially real RIOs but I was specifically wondering about whether we will get any kind of RIO training missions or even videos within the module itself.
