When firing an Aim-120, I can switch targets once the missile has been fired. Fire-And-Forget.

Can I do the same when firing a Aim-7? Or do I need to maintain a lock until the target has been hit or missed?

You must maintain the lock in single target track (STT) mode, the aircraft’s radar guides the missile. AIM120 has its own active radar and you can break lock once it has gone active (ACT countdown on HUD to 0)
