hitman Posted July 20, 2007 Posted July 20, 2007 I was out on a field trip today while in class and stopped by this museum for a few hours. Sorry for the low res pics, I dont have a decent camera but just on my cell phone. The ONLY B-1A in any museum. I wonder what that buldge is outlined in the dotted yellow lines...you wont see them on B-1B models. Engine F-100 Super Sabre Some Corsair pics B-61 thermonuclear canisters I have some very rough pics of the 'vark, but you couldnt tell what it was with this camera. This F-14 is still on active duty (somewhat). I know they are retired, but this crew doesnt care. I want to say B-25...I could be wrong. Next time I will come prepared. The B-1A is airframe #3 IIRC and its the only static display of a B-1 model, and this thing is absolutely huge. The B-52D they had out in front was in better condition, but it was too bright outside to get a good picture of it. Ill have more and better pics next time I visit. GGTharos Posted July 20, 2007 Posted July 20, 2007 The bulge is the cockpit module. Like the F-111, the B-1A was supposed to eject the entire cockpit instead of throwing people out individually. This proved to be more dangerous to the crew than current ejection methods as the weight of the module could cause serious issues - fast landings (spinal injury, bounce/rolling, problem with water landings, etc) and as such it was deleted in the B-1B. hitman Posted July 20, 2007 Author Posted July 20, 2007 What I meant was theres a triangle looking buldge outlined with the rest of the 'pit. I assumed the rest of the dotted outlines were explosive lined bolts to eject the entire cockpit, but Ive never seen them specific buldges before. You can see it in the second picture down. If what you say is true, then yeah I can understand, but I would think that it has a technical function instead of just exploding. GGTharos Posted July 20, 2007 Posted July 20, 2007 Ah, those I -believe- are inflatable horizontal stabilizers, I forget though, it's been a while. :) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
warthogmadman987 Posted July 20, 2007 Posted July 20, 2007 Correction I want to say B-25...I could be wrong. That is actually a B-24 Liberator. The B-25 Mitchell was a smaller twin engine medium bomber that was more popular in the early parts of WWII compared to when the much larger B-24s/B-17s/B-29s were used. B-25 Below http://www.zap16.com/sanicole2004/san04%20B-25%20Mitchell%20dobaf%201.jpg B-24 Below (This is what hitman saw AFAIK) http://home.inu.net/jcallahan/B-24.jpg
hitman Posted July 20, 2007 Author Posted July 20, 2007 I wanted to say B-24 too...I didnt get close enough to read the plaque. The front end resembles a turtle snout and the B-25 didnt look like that...but its the rudder config that threw me off. hitman Posted July 21, 2007 Author Posted July 21, 2007 So what are them triangular buldges on the sides of that aircraft?
