My undertstanding over the years was that the Phoenix was a super long range missile. Even in the manual is talks about the one variant having a minimum range of 60nm. I cant recall a scenarion where ive even come close to launching one before the 60nm range. what am I missing?

Multiple ways, depending on what you are doing, from the DDD to the TID.

In TWS mode, the easiest way is by simply hooking the target. You can also eyeball it by means of the dashed lines delimiting the radar cone.

You can also toggle visual cues by means of the buttons right under the TID (launch zone, for instance).

Check the manual for further details, it has everything you need to know. The rest is mission editor and practice :)

I have consistently achieved 60nm+ kills with the Mk60 on the 104th both with Jester and a Human RIO. The longest kill I have score with a human was 82nm. When you fox with a well place TWS shot with high speeds and medium altitude the Phoenix is a beast that catches a lot of people off guard.
