Eldur Posted March 23, 2019 Posted March 23, 2019 (edited) Reduce engine thrust at extreme altitudes. This made me do another high alt / high speed test, again My observations, track's wrecked so I can't attach that; Took a clean airframe, pylons removed, but with drop tanks to get up quickly, dropped them via emergency jettision since Jester refuses to drop them in the last two versions. Had issues trying to cruise at MIL power at 45+ kft. Induced AoA by low IAS literally ate up my thrust/drag ratio and the plane couldn't stay up there. Somewhere around 45kft I hit the ceiling so to say. I somehow suspect that's too low. Just did a quick glance at probably one of the worst sources (wiki) and the English site said "50+kft" (man, that's just, like, "the release is just around the corner"), the German one however sais 17070m which is ~56kft. Source given for that is https://www.navy.mil/navydata/fact.asp which doesn't have the Tomcat listed (anymore, probably, since she's outta service) though. My simple guess is it should be possible to go up there without AB which wasn't possible for me since the most recent changes. Then I took her into full AB to get the max speed at ~37kft again. As the FF is extremely high even at high altitudes, I didn't have too much time, started out with ~13500lbs and the joy was over in less than 10 minutes. Got her up to just above 2.1 IMN, so nothing changed here yet. Then I pulled her up to 54kft and could stay up there with slightly above 1.85 IMN. FF was a tad lower up there, but she still drank like a pony who didn't have any cider in a year I know the FF gauges don't take AB into account, and the FF goes down nicely. It's just the AB FF that seems to be weird IMHO. Can't monitor it exactly though. Having it in data export for external devices would be cool though, just for testing purposes Just to compare: In the F/A-18C, I can drive on full AB at 54kft with roughly the same FF that I have at MIL on the deck. Same goes for the Mirage and the F-15C at least, feels similar in the Su-27/33 and MiG-29s (no FF gauge though) and IIRC even the MiG-21bis takes a lot less fuel per time with AB up there. The Viggen though doesn't have that good high alt FM though (that M 1.85 wall thingy comes to mind... but she's not supposed to be up there mostly), and her engines just die at just above 14000m, but her FF doesn't seem to get lower in AB usage either. By the way, not having taken times or something to compare with real test data, I feel the acceleration might be a bit low as well when punching in AB. It takes a lot of time to get the speed up. Did so as well in the F-14A in another sim, but I thought the B's stonger engines would make her build up speed quicker as well. Since this is a feeling, I can't say if it's right or wrong, but it may be worth having a look at by both the community and the HB team. And of course, I know this is early access and things might not be 100% perfect yet Edited March 23, 2019 by Eldur
