Harlikwin Posted March 26, 2019 Posted March 26, 2019 So I've been having "fun" with the ACLS lately. Which is great especially in low-res VR. On ACLS night landing mode, or "brown trousers" fun mode as I like to call it. I've earned a whole new respect for guys that do this in real life. Some dim red lights you can't read, and a blurry white light blob you know is the carrier, but can't quite make out and a plane doing crazy ass shit all by itself... (I did it a few times in manual/ILS mode and that seemed far less scary) Anyhow question is this. I've noticed that the ACLS basically points the VVI right at the island during landing, right up till the last moment where it slews over to the trap on the deck. I'm wondering if that behavior is really there IRL and also why? New hotness: I7 9700k 4.8ghz, 32gb ddr4, 2080ti, :joystick: TM Warthog. Harlikwin Posted March 26, 2019 Author Posted March 26, 2019 How does it lead it by pointing at the island? New hotness: I7 9700k 4.8ghz, 32gb ddr4, 2080ti, :joystick: TM Warthog. Possum Posted March 26, 2019 Posted March 26, 2019 By VVI, do you mean Velocity Vector? VVI is actually Vertical Velocity Indicator. The VV uses the earth as reference, not the ship. It’s placement will vary based on ship speed, which is determined by natural winds. In most circumstances, the VV will be near the Crotch at the ball call. As you approach, it will drift towards the wires and approximate your touchdown point. In the pre-GPS Tomcat, the VV was jerky and lagged from what I hear. With GPS integration, it became much more reliable.
Harlikwin Posted March 26, 2019 Author Posted March 26, 2019 Yes velocity vector indication. It is pointing atnthe island then points toward the wiress.
