Miles Vorkosigan Posted April 13, 2019 Posted April 13, 2019 DIY six degree of freedom (6DoF) VR motion simpit, someone that I was flying with last night asked me to post pictures so here you go: Motors are 6 @ Bodine 12v DC, 42rpm, 23amp, 310in-lb. with 3 1/2" cranks. Motor drivers are 3 @ Sabertooth 2x32 by MotionDynamics (two motors 32amp with 64 amp spike) Micro controllers are 3 @ Arduino UNO (one per Sabertooth) running SMC3 motion cue program by Rufus Dufus and modified by BlazinH (X-Simulator.net members) Power is suppliedby 6 @ 30amp LED PSUs in chain with a small lawn mower battery to absorb regenerative current (which could damage or shut down the power supplies). Motion software is Simtools with game plugins provided by the community at X-Simulator.net (special thanks to Value1). Two bass transducers on the arm rests provide the thump and bump. The six degrees of freedom are Heave, Surge, Sway, Roll, Pitch and Yaw. The monitor stand is left over from my previous VR simpit. I need to rework the mount to have it closer so I can see the screen when I am not in VR. It is within squint distance though ;)
Brewnix Posted April 14, 2019 Posted April 14, 2019 Awesome machine. That looks like the Samsung O you have hanging there? Curious on how the HMD tracking is while moving? [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
0414 Wee Neal Posted April 14, 2019 Posted April 14, 2019 Platform Hi Propnut that looks great. I fly with a 2DOF from DOFreality which is great, but am considering upgrading to a 6DOF! Woud you be willing to share your design, completely understand if not. What length of movement do you have on the crank arms? Thanks Neal Desktop PC: Intel i7 14700K, MSI Z790 MAG Tomahawk MOBO, 64Gb RAM , GPU Nvidia RTX 3080ti Windows 11, VPC joystick, Crosswind rudder peddles, HP Reverb G2, VPC Collective, DOF Reality H2, Gametrix seat, WinWing panels.
Miles Vorkosigan Posted April 14, 2019 Author Posted April 14, 2019 Brewnix: It tracks very well, there is some worry about motion cancellation but I have not had any problems. I have heard others mention that they do have some issues when driving race cars but they also have their rigs set up to have very violent motion :D Bluethornton: You can see more details about my build on Xsimulator.net here: https://www.xsimulator.net/community/threads/6dof-vr-flight-pit.13070/
Hansolo Posted April 17, 2019 Posted April 17, 2019 Awesome work Propnut  Looking forward for a small vid showing while running Cheers Hans 132nd Virtual Wing homepage & 132nd Virtual Wing YouTube channel My DCS-BIOS sketches & Cockpit Album
