RAM question

Hey guys,

 

 

On a whim, I decided to go ahead and plunge into the big 32GB world. I'm not much in understanding the architecture of Windows 7, but noticed after installing that my OS is capped to 16GB. Will that affect how much DCS can utilize? I'm guessing yes? If that's the case, should I upgrade to windows 10?

 

 

I know lots about how to fly jets but just an amateur computer builder.

I believe some versions of Windows 7 only recognize/support up to 16 GB. So, if you wanted to upgrade your OS now's as good a time as any to do so.

 

 

You probably forked over plenty of dough for that RAM, so make sure your new OS will support it! I'm pretty sure all flavours of Windows 10 will use 32 or even 64 GB, but check to make sure!

Okay. So it sounds like I’m right. If you own windows 7 HE 64 bit, you are limited to DCS using only the 16GB allocated for windows?

it could be windows, i am not sure about that version of windows 7, but it could also be your motherboard. some MB’s only support 16GB

Yeah I checked that, MB limit is 32GB. I guess I’ll go ahead and upgrade to Win 10. Support is ending for Win 7 anyways. :/

Solved

 

So after upgrading to Win 10, my Ram cap was indeed removed. The 16GB usable was removed.

 

 

Now I assume I need to check all programs including DCS, to see if I need to reinstall an compatible version. :doh:

i’m surprised there was a 16GB limit. some of our guys at work ran win 7 and they had more than 16GB installed.

Yeah I saw that info. My question though was, if windows is capped at 16GB Ram, is DCS also capped at that amount?

Move to 10, the memory limits in 10 are beyond what we will ever use and much more consumer friendly.

i didn’t know microsoft limited ram usage for the Home versions.

 

everyone i know ran the Pro version.

FYI

 

There also is this 10 Workstation Edition 64Bit.

 

4 CPU Sockets and 6TB RAM Supported,

and that PowerMode we talked about elsewhere in this forum.

 

Not that I want or need that anytime soon.

quad cpu would be pretty neat. the trick is finding something useful to process.

 

we had.a dual cpu machine to play with and the cores sat idle 90% of the time.

we couldn’t keep it busy.

same here, the cores went to the beach for a sunny day, no work to do...baaahhhhhhhhh
