Anyone else believe that a night time SAM launch would be a lot more visible reality, especially through NVGs?

I watched some footage of a raid on Baghdad in Desert Storm and were some missile launches. They were pretty damn visible, especially when passing through the clouds and smoke. Of course, that's only for the first few seconds, after the engine's out there's nothing to see.
