SwingKid Posted November 17, 2004 Posted November 17, 2004 The F-15 was also capable of air-to-ground, but the US never used it this way. Its role was dedicated air-to-air combat. The Germans tasked the MiG-29 the same way after reunification. Luftwaffe MiG pilots never used air-to-ground weapons. -SK
Drakkhen Posted November 17, 2004 Posted November 17, 2004 Beside... the german 29A can take the awesome 27T while the russian doesn't. "Heroism is the only way to get famous when you got no talent" Pierre Desproges "Whether fifty millions people say a stupid thing, it's still a stupid thing." The S takes them but not the A, don't know why but it's so. And I've heard something about enabling the 27T on the Russian A's as well, as it appears that they were also fitted with that capability.

Basicly the MiG's 29A (9-12) (as they were delivered) couldnt take R-27T missiles, they were modernised so now thay can. GROM- Grupa Reagowania Operacyjno Manewrowego
Drakkhen Posted November 17, 2004 Posted November 17, 2004 Fine, cause it's a good one... a damn good one. "Heroism is the only way to get famous when you got no talent" Pierre Desproges "Whether fifty millions people say a stupid thing, it's still a stupid thing." Anatole France
ED Team Chizh Posted November 17, 2004 ED Team Posted November 17, 2004 We have an F-15A weapons handbook. And we always be wondered, why in USAF never to exploit the air-ground capabilities of this plane. They are more significant, than at Su-27/33, and the nomenclature of A-G weapons is not less than at A-10. Единственный урок, который можно извлечь из истории, состоит в том, что люди не извлекают из истории никаких уроков. (С) Джордж Бернард Шоу
SwingKid Posted November 17, 2004 Posted November 17, 2004 We have an F-15A weapons handbook. And we always be wondered, why in USAF never to exploit the air-ground capabilities of this plane. They are more significant, than at Su-27/33, and the nomenclature of A-G weapons is not less than at A-10. It's a political reason. After Vietnam, USAF insisted that multi-role fighters like F-4 were not acceptable, and demanded a pure air-combat fighter - the expensive F-15. They received the necessary money from Congress. Eventually, McDonnell Douglas started to experiment putting bombs on F-15A. Then, the competition arrived from F-16, which had many similar capabilities, longer range, and lower cost. To reduce the competition and to receive money from US government for both aircraft, USAF emphasized the differences, that the F-15 was a pure air-to-air fighter ("not a pound for air to ground!"), and F-16 was needed for carrying bombs. Air-to-ground capability of F-15 was never again discussed. Now we see again history repeating itself, with F-35 competing for money - only now the opposite, F-22 needed to quickly become "F/A-22" in order to survive. -SK
golfsierra2 Posted November 18, 2004 Posted November 18, 2004 See this for details: http://www.sipotec.net/Neu_Ausr/Waffensysteme/mig29g_gt_beschr.html The MiG29 G and MiG29GT (trainer version) were technicaly capabel of delivering even air-to-ground ammo, but it was never trained nor were the weapon loads available. The MIG29G was used solely in the air-to-air role. Weapons which could be used were: 2 x R-27R1 (AA-10a/ALAMO) 4 x R-73A (AA-11/ARCHER x GSh-301-Kanone (150 Schuß, 1500-1800 Schuß/min) kind regards, Raven....
