Fri13 Posted December 1, 2019 Posted December 1, 2019 (edited) Is it possible that in future we would see a ground units utilizing a more realistic FOV limitations when inside? And requiring a commander to come out for air units spotting etc? Found one of the old my pictures from 2015, part of the DCS Combined Arms wishes. Each color represent the unit different crew members possible LOS sectors (no vertical presented for the idea, but it would be there as well). Each crew member would scan their own possible sectors separately, and the most complex part would be the internal communications delay. Like if a commander spots something, it takes X seconds for the commander to command gunner to target at given direction, and then for it to find the target in the area (faster than finding himself alone). Commander can start searching a new targets after the gunner confirms spotting etc, but only like a "TWS" mode where commander search area but then confirms the hits etc after gunner firing etc. A very complex simulation to do. driver and loader would have their own tasks (if exist in vehicles) and can't help in normal operations like driver can't really be searching enemies. And when the individual crew members are simulated in ground units, one can start injuring them, killing them, causing stress to moral and that way influence to unit operations. Example a artillery barrage increases everyone stress, lowers visibility to spot and engage existing known targets and overall increase (or halts) scanning speed but lowers detection capabilities. Each units has different other effects too, like if engine is running, the crew is deaf to any sound that is outside (other than explosions etc). And as one can see, there is lots of blind spots around the vehicle, so one can have a possibility to sneak around a unit when it ain't looking at that direction. And especially air attacks are very dangerous as it requires that there is infantry around them, hearing and spotting the air units. The ground units would mainly receive air threat warnings from radio. And this would make it possible to surprise ground units by attacking from different direction than where they saw you last time, as they can't be there scanning all places at once. And this is why a MBT platoon is important as everyone has own sectors to focus on, and if someone spots enemy, it is reported over radio to commander and then to all. And all that takes time from units to communicate. Kang Posted December 1, 2019 Posted December 1, 2019 That's a great suggestion. The way ground units have 100% spotting probability 360° round, through terrain and objects is definitely a weak point.
