DutchCoolHand Posted March 23, 2020 Posted March 23, 2020 (edited) Good evening gents and ladies I am sure, I have been flying in VR for about 14 months and I have been always partially blind in my left eye. But in the last 6 months my blindness has gone worse (glaucoma) and I now really only see through the right screen in my Rift S headset. One of my main goals is to be able to do air to air refueling, I have practiced that more than anything else. One of my issues I felt was that my Thrustmaster was too stiff, could not make small adjustments. I got different springs but still no joy. So I am the happy owner of a virpil WarBRD base. What a difference!!!! I can hook up now relatively easy, staying connected is another problem. But what I notice is that when I approach the hose and close it seems to “move” and I wonder if I see the hose in a different place then it is. As I only see one screen is the depth perception off. I don’t know how the 2 screens built the joined image. Are 2 screens an exact copy? Fri13 Posted March 23, 2020 Posted March 23, 2020 As I only see one screen is the depth perception off. I don’t know how the 2 screens built the joined image. Are 2 screens an exact copy? Hi. The two screens are not exact copies. They are actual virtual cameras that are set separated by the IPD value (distance between your pupils) in HMD, but in DCS that value is more about a World Scale than it is about IPD changing. But the point of VR truly is that you have two virtual cameras and both has their own display in VR (even when the display is physically one screen). So you will have depth perception as normally with the VR, but there are various other problems in it that you might have learn to adapt in reality. As main way how human brains measure distance is that how much does the eyes turn to see something far and close. And the eyes muscles will inform brains that something is close or far and how much. And this is combined as well with your eyes focusing. And in VR your focus is currently limited to two meters distance, but there is idea to get the variable focus distance as well. But when you have just the focus set to 2 meters and your eyes look something differently in the screen position, your brain might start to tell that it ain't right and calls the bluff. And your brains might have very well adapted to your other eye condition so much that it is more sensitive to the depth measurement in reality by using other means, that in VR it just doesn't work. i7-8700k, 32GB 2666Mhz DDR4, 2x 2080S SLI 8GB, Oculus Rift S. i7-8700k, 16GB 2666Mhz DDR4, 1080Ti 11GB, 27" 4K, 65" HDR 4K.
Bob_Bushman Posted March 23, 2020 Posted March 23, 2020 Can't really comment to your initial question. Don't look at the hose or the basket. In the f18 I find it more reliable to keep the refueling pod, the one on the wing right above the HUD glass panels but below the canopy rail. I might give a quick glance on the basket right before I hook up, but when I am connected I don't look at anything but keeping the pod in the right position, from experience even just glancing at the basket or probe during refueling almost guarantee the start of an oscillation. i7 8700k @ 4.7, 32GB 2900Mhz, 1080ti, CV1 Virpil MT-50\Delta, MFG Crosswind, Warthog Throttle, Virptil Mongoost-50 throttle.
DutchCoolHand Posted March 24, 2020 Author Posted March 24, 2020 Fri13, thanks for the information, I have been blind in my left eye for 45 years, I am used to it and usually don't have a major issue with depth perception. ok, I don't like playing ping pong. I think there is something in what you are saying. DutchCoolHand Posted March 24, 2020 Author Posted March 24, 2020 Yes, Bob, I try not to look but it seems if I shift left or right exactly at the last moment. I think i do n't always sit in the exact same position. Let me explain. For 6 months I have this strange problem in the Hornet where when I enter the cockpit basically sit on the left panel. And no matter how I try I can't move my position using the keyboard. so I offset myself to left and press recenter and I am in the right position. Or almost the same position. DutchCoolHand Posted March 24, 2020 Author Posted March 24, 2020 Great news and I have to thank Bob here, I was able to connect and stay on. Your tip of keeping the pod between top of hud and canopy helped.in the past I did not think I could get that close and be fine. I first changed the S3 to a KC130 as it is a bit more stable. I forgot to change the speed so I came in at 325 while the C130 was at 250. So I hit the speed brake and then forget to close it. But it seemed that the plane was more stable. So switched it back to the S3 and tried the same, with the speed brake out it seems to respond a bit slower. Was able to connect again and stay on. Then tried it again without the speed brake and I think it helped me get better to make small movements. I also turned down the friction on the TM throttle all the way. It feels great as this was one of my personal goals I had to accomplish before I would go fly online.
