Getting Back on Approach to Carrier

I have no idea how to get back to the boat in line with the runway to start my approach. I've tried using the tacan HSD pointer (which I think puts me on the BRC bearing), but that seems to consistently place me at 90 degrees off where I need to be (3 o'clock, looking from the runway towards the bow). I could probably make it work but I'd like to get this sorted before I get into bad habits. If any of you know of a tutorial for this I'd appreciate it if you could link it to me, I must be missing something mind-numbingly simple but I have no idea what else to try.

Thanks for replying :) Yeah I do set the BRC on the Tacan, get all three arrows of the HSD pointer aligned and in line with the Tacan arrow on the outside of the circle... Getting lined up properly is what I thought that was meant to achieve, is that your understanding too?

In my post I said VDI, but you're right it's the HSD. Sounds like you've got it right. Best thing would be for you to do the training mission for the F14.

I would use the ILS needles for the boat when turning to final. If you join the Marshall stack correctly and fly the pattern you won't have issues lining up using only the ILS needles.

 

ILS channels are on the right panel below the gun lead counter. Make sure to set the hud and vdi to AWL mode and the steer point to AWL/ILS.
