Those SOPs are interesting because they're basically saying that flying a helicopter in combat is suicide unless you have everything juuuuuuust right. I had a chuckle about the ambient light from a "trash-fire barrel".

"...and don't breathe too hard while operating the helicopter. Scratching your nose isn't a good idea either..."

I do have some expirience with attack helicopter tactics in terms of simulation. I played TacOps for quite sometime (and still occasionally do). If they weren't such a damn effective force multiplyer, I really don't think we'd bother with them for combat.

Those aren't SOPs, the article is an opinion piece and has little bearing on reality. Some of the suggestions are fine, but don't apply to just helicopters. It sounds like the author is just convinced that helicopters are deathtraps.

Good point.

With that in mind, I have reduced the Helicopter Survival Tactics and Procedures down to just one item:

1. Don't get shot.

If you can do that one thing, you should be able to survive (note that I said *should*).

You took my use of SOPs too literally, I'm afraid. I wasn't aware that it would be taken so seriously. Next time I'll just say "stuff some guy say you should think about" rather than SOPs. Thats all I really meant.

funny readings

That is funny, considering this was written in 1988, just one year prior to the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Found some really cool readings, shame they are in Russian, if anyone can read in Russian let me know... not everything can be used but gives civilian a lot of ideas in heli strategy and tactics etc, funny it is a manual for other heli sim :) involving Ka-52
