RedTiger Posted February 7, 2008 Posted February 7, 2008 I was gonna ask what happened to it and then I saw the last set of pictures. Ouch. Yeah, a big waste of money. Too little, too late I'm afraid. I guess the upside for the Russians is that the space shuttle is old technology with active research in what will replace it. EDIT: Its very, very interesting how you can see the Russian standardization of aircraft parts even in their spacecraft!!!
Shaman Posted February 7, 2008 Posted February 7, 2008 EDIT: Its very, very interesting how you can see the Russian standardization of aircraft parts even in their spacecraft!!! Oh yes :) To operate it you had to "THINK RUSSIAN" :D 51PVO Founding member (DEC2007-) 100KIAP Founding member (DEC2018-) :: Shaman aka [100☭] Shamansky tail# 44 or 444 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] 100KIAP Regiment Early Warning & Control officer
4c Hajduk Veljko Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 Well, they made it, it worked and it turned out to be cheaper to get the stuff up in the space with Soyuz. Money spent for research and production of Buran was well spent. And the knowledge and skills are now avaialble to build new space ships. I don't see that as waste at all. MAFIA Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 2 TorwaK: Thank you for finding this exsellent photos! But i think second photo is fake... Because Buran was launched at night. Fourth photo is the real launch;) I was gonna ask what happened to it and then I saw the last set of pictures. Ouch. No... It's not Buran! It's training camera for astronauts... Buran wasn't cuted. It was sold to Australia uncuted...
MAFIA Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 There was something interesting about launch: when engines started missile with Buran moved side and crashed concrete protuberance on launching ground but all finished good Buran launched...
TorwaK Posted February 8, 2008 Author Posted February 8, 2008 You're welcome. Buran project was a victim of condutions. I expect that Russian space industry will return to alive in 10 years if petrol parity fas goes like that. Pilotasso Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 Buran project was an interesting piece of kit indeed. But both the buran and the space shuttle were too early in time to prove the concept of a cheaper means to reach space as a space plane. The technology just wasnt there yet when they were built. Its just now possible, but sadly semi-reusable rockets have become even more economical. What Nasa has in forge is a space pod like the lunar module mounted on top of one of the space shuttles RSB's. The project is called ARES and the suttle will eventualy stop flying but its old technology will be used to propel the new tin can to space thus explaining its low price. .
Captain R Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 Great pictures. I have been wanting to see more of the ship.
