Plus the Bears would just be sent out to distract if there was a real attack. I had read in another fourm people making fun of the Bears being very old and antiquated. But they are still a match in speed/range of the B-52 which is nearly as old. Plus a Bear could still sink 98% of the wessles traveling the seas right now. Sure if you have Ageis equipped cruisers protecting you and AWACS directed fighters sure you would be safe from them. But they would only be sent out to draw fighters away from the carrier groups. Like those missles the Soviets had with transponders so they were thought to be bombers and drew the fighters away from the carriers.

These would most likely be sent for a true attack.

Not so. If the Bear would tried anything (opened its payload-doors), the Super hornets would have taken action...
Why would they do that? We are friendly countreis. Cold war is over.

Nothing more than internal political muscle flexing- for their own good. Pooty Pie has to do something to puff himself & the russian military up in front of the public. This has been going on for a long while. The difference now is that someone in the melodramatic media noticed. The US navy knew they were there, knew they were coming out, and if any hostile intentions were about- they would have all been taken out WAY ahead of time. Let em put on their little theatre if they want. Those guys don't get to fly in a year what a US pilot does in a month.

While I agree with you on the media being melodramatic, IMO there's a bit more to it than that. That "a bit more" is what the Western media is playing off of. Unfortunately, that aspect can't really be discussed here any further since the thread will go all political and that will be that. Its enough to say this: Putin's -perceived- political track record since he's been in office and Russia's -perceived- (emphasis on PERCEIVED!!!) acceptance of that record plus this military bluster is what could potentially raise eyebrows in the West.

No political statements here and no opinion from me. This is just what causes the Western media to get in an uproar about all this.

cause Putin wants to start something, and waiting for U.S. to respond.

Noooo, NOO, nobody on earth would be so stupid to start something ugly (and it would be very ugly)…

But I think we can’t deny that the Ruskies are back in business (the flying business).

Im Sure the US fighter pilots are actualy delighted to see those bombers again, the same the russian crews who must like to walkabout with nostalgia.

I think those pilot's saw Bear for the first time, being too young 20+ years ago!
