Fun against the F-14

Alter the F-5E Nevada instant action dogfight mission against the F-14 so that the player is flying a MiG-21bis with whatever loadout you like, and have some fun. You start behind the F-14, but with no speed and he is climbing hard to reverse back into you.

 

If you like missiles, you can get him with SARH or IR, but I prefer to fight the same way I do when I fly the F-5E: go for guns. With good flying and good timing, the AI F-14 can be beat. But if you don't execute efficiently, it ends up being like the MiG-21bis instant action dogfight against the F-4: you can stay behind him for quite some time, but can't ever pull enough lead to shoot.

 

If he gets behind on your 6, it is more than possible to win a rolling scissors and spit him out in front of you. But if you stick to guns, it is hard to recover enough energy to point your nose to shoot after doing so. But it is pretty easy to set up R-60 shots if you are more of a missile person.

 

Overall, if you don't kill the F-14 with missiles at the very beginning, this is great training on learning how to efficiently get your nose around. Because if you are too inefficient, the F-14 will come around and shoot you. He won't hesitate to use missiles or guns as required.

Having fought F-14B countless times I can say that its not easy. But F-14 is beatable and more realistic than F-4E Ai which maintains over you constant energy advantage while carrying 8 missiles and maneuvering hard.

 

I was thinking however of adding that as a part of Persian Gulf Instant Action. Iraqi MiG-21 vs Iranian F-14A would make a neat dogfight.
