pappy boyington Posted July 12, 2020 Posted July 12, 2020 hey all, first post here. looking at getting in to dcs and have my computer rig almost built. have been lurking around here and watching YT vids. looks very interesting to me, appeals to my techy nature i think. i have currently a 32" lcd tv with a 60hz refresh i'm planning to run this on, i've seen that i will probably need a head tracker which i'm totally not familiar with. my questions at the moment. will this tv work to get started? and in the vids i watched on head tracker it looked like you had to move your head in direction you want to look in cockpit while keeping your eyes on the screen. seems like that could get uncomfortable? anyway, thats it for now thanks
bart Posted July 12, 2020 Posted July 12, 2020 (edited) Hi and welcome to DCS!. Yes DCS will work great on your 32" flat screen TV. I used a Sony 32" TV for a long time before I took the leap into VR, I do still use it as my PC monitor. I used TrackIR and it worked great with the Sony TV, don't worry about twisting your head and keeping eyes on the screen at the same time, you will get used to it. TrackIR comes with software that allows you to adjust the sensitivity of your set up so only a small real life head movement will move your in game head quite a bit. It takes a little while to set up but once there it works great. A curious side effect of using TrackIR I found was when watching normal TV I found myself moving my head to see certain angles as if I was still in TrackIR!! Hope this helps a bit, be warned though, DCS is addictive and you'll soon be wanting that latest module or map or that expensive bit of hardware that will make all the difference! It's a great hobby. pappy boyington Posted July 12, 2020 Author Posted July 12, 2020 the last flight sim i played was one of the first aces combat series and way back before that microsoft combat flight simulator, i loved that one. iv'e gotten bored with call of duty type games. dcs looks a little more challenging to learn. how is dcs on the multi player side of it for a noob?
Baaz Posted July 13, 2020 Posted July 13, 2020 I second Bart's statements. Personally I play on a 43" flat screen with TrackIR. Works well for me. I spent a better part of 2 hours on day one with TrackIR just fine tuning. Now, it's really a joy. Point my nose at the edge of the screen, and I'm looking over my right or left shoulder accordingly. I'm only turning my head 15 degrees to look 90. Not a lot of movement at all. You'll get use to it. Personally, I found TrackIR more comfortable than VR. I don't have the weight of the headset on my face, and don't have to break my neck to see behind me. I'm sure you'll be satisfied with the TrackIR/TV combo.
Pikey Posted July 14, 2020 Posted July 14, 2020 hey all, and in the vids i watched on head tracker it looked like you had to move your head in direction you want to look in cockpit while keeping your eyes on the screen. seems like that could get uncomfortable? You can look in a completely different direction than your head is pointing without even thinking about it :) Read this whilst rotating your head about. It's actually easy. The acceleration on the amount of turn required to look exactly behind you is very minor, less than 30 degrees. That is tunable too. What is uncomfortable is having to actually turn your head around to look in that direction (RL or VR). Now that is uncomfortable. ___________________________________________________________________________ SIMPLE SCENERY SAVING * SIMPLE GROUP SAVING * SIMPLE STATIC SAVING *
shu77 Posted July 17, 2020 Posted July 17, 2020 Yeah a 32" screen is great, mainly depends on refresh rate. If you want to get onto Multiplayer check out SRS on the mods thread, its used on most servers and provides a 'room per channel' experience. Multiplayer varies greatly but can be a bit lonley without a squadron. shu77 Posted July 17, 2020 Posted July 17, 2020 BTW TRACKIR is great, I agree try one of the free solutions to get a feel for it, but if you are not going to go VR its the only way to enjoy playing. Picture being able to get a 90degree turn in the screen by moving your head 30 degrees it allows you to look out the side of your aircraft or at the side panels with a minor glance of your head. I cant play without it.
