Hi all,

anybody knows how this works?

In new OB Patch (4th nov. 2020) changelog stand this ....

  • Improved JDAM Relative targeting procedure. Now it is possible to do multiple JDAM relative releases

anybody can help ?

JDAM relative targeting

JDAM relative targeting, also known as TOO mode, has become more practical.

Initially you had to designate a target with the TPOD, lase it, and then LONG WINC to pass the target coordinates to the bomb and then release it. If you wanted to drop another bomb to a different target in the same area, you had to LONG WINC to release the previous coordinates and then redo the entire procedure for the new target.

That is NOT how it works on the real aircraft.

The procedure to do a JDAM relative targeting is as follows:

  1. Enable AUTO mode by following the AUTO release mode procedures.
  2. After the EHSD is DESG STP, designate your target with the TPOD. This will become the System Designation (SD).
  3. The EHSD will show DESG TGT.
  4. Use Laser ranging to get an accurate position of the SD in relation to the aircraft.
  5. LONG WINC to pass the SD position to T0.
  6. The EHSD will show DESG STP and T0 will be the new steer-point.
  7. Follow the release cues and drop the bomb when ready.
  8. To select a new target, just slew the TPOD sensor with the TDC. DO NOT DO A NEW DESIGNATION (pressing TDC down). T0 will automatically update itself. The EHSD will remain in DESG STP.
  9. Follow the release cues and drop the next bomb when ready.
  10. Repeat steps 8 and 9 as required.
  11. To leave JDAM relative targeting, just unselect the bomb or un-designate the target.

The 'multiple' aspect refers to not having to go through the whole target selection process again when dropping multiple bombs in a row, as it keeps updating what it will send to undropped bombs.

Following the steps Recluse linked, you can more quickly and easily drop multiple JDAM's in a row. For (near) simultaneous drops, you still need to use the pre-planned method.

Yeah, thanks! I meant to mention that distinction around "multiple". On another note, as I was re-reading the Razbam notes above I was wondering about Step 8 and 9. Shouldn't you have to repeat Step 4 for the Laser Ranging after moving to a new target to update that for the new positions, esp. if it is far from the original?

You can always go through the steps again, especially if you for whatever reason doubt the accuracy, but it's not outright required with the new system.

I have noticed that the accuracy can be a bit off with multiple TOO drops in a row, but against stuff like trucks and BTR's, it's still plenty accurate. If you also have tanks you need to kill, take the GBU-54 Laser JDAM's.

The laser seeker head allows them to be used like GBU-12's and such, most likely including buddy lasing. At the same time, because they still have the JDAM GPS guidance, you don't need to have the laser active if you got the target set. The laser is simply there for moving targets, improved accuracy in general, and buddy lasing.

Very nice. Question, similar to the one I asked above: No longer any need to use the Laser Rangefinding to fine tune the target? TPOD is good enough?

Also.. just about all the drops were showing a very low probability of hit but they ALL shacked pretty small targets! Not necessary to obsess of pickle near 100%?

Laser rangefinding isn't really simulated, TPOD always has perfect range to whatever ground it's pointing at if dropping non-laser guided ordinance. This means it will range 'through' targets, so you should always aim at the ground beneath them unless using a laser designator, which will recognize the target. TL:DR; laser rangefinding with the Harrier currently has no effect.

As for the %'s, that's not probability of hit, that's the % you are within the LAR. 100% means smack in the middle of the LAR. Just because you're at the edges of the LAR does not necessarily mean you will have reduced accuracy, though I imagine being at the fringes and maneuvering would induce computing lag that may cause issues. Generally, even in other aircraft, I wait 10 seconds or so in stable flight after entering the LAR to release to make sure all the math is done. That roughly equates to about 20 or so in the Harrier.

Thanks for that! At one time I think I actually knew that. :smilewink:

Just going to move this to Harrier gen instead of bug reports

Know and use all the capabilities in your airplane. If you don't, sooner or later, some guy who does use them all will kick your ass.
