You have just to avoid doing it on your opponents terms. Thats the whole point. Flying low and slow prompts any F-15 high scorers into outshooting you. The tactic I use for flanker is to fly unnoticed untill 25km (usualy flying high using support from others), from then on the flanker has the advantage.

When the SM 'comes out' it'll just get owned by a Raptor without ever knowing what hit it, or by an F-15 equipped with APG-63v3 and AIM-120D. Probably barely knowing what hit it with the last one.

 

Oh wait, you mean in LOCK ON. Well then yes, the Su-27SM would just pwn everything under the sun.

Not so, as you can see from other threads, the R-77 has less range than AMRAAM C5 or 7.

 

This is why russia still carries a mix of R-27's (other reasosn being the low avaiablity of actual R-77's)

In a flanker you wouldnt hit squat with the AMRAAM. You would have to use STT mode and give yourself away immidiatly before launch (something you can only guess against F-15). Everybody knows how to spoof off an AMRAAM shot in these conditions with a high degree of safety margin. It lacks speed and the rear aspect range of the R-77 (thats why the mig is so sucessfull).

 

I can say that Mig is so successful not only because of his R77 you can avoid by B-roll, but mainly because of his ET will kill anytime.

They are not so different that a missile wont kill you before reaching knife fight anyway.

Everyone wants to believe they have it harder than the other guy ;) but when someone questions the strength of a particular fighter in LO, then we hear the same people shouting "your not flying it right" etc :) .

 

 

The fact is that every game/sim has a BFG (Big ****ing Gun) and in LO that's the Mig29. Yep I've said it, they have it the easiest and not becasue of the R77.... oh no it's becasue of that one piece of Russian technology that western scientists have drooled over for years and that is the LOD cloaking device. Many people think the reason the Mig29 drinks so much fuel is becasue the engines are so thirsty,.. oh no, the dilithium crystals used to power the cloaking device chews up most of the fuel but at least the benefits of not being seen out weigh any fuel issues by far. That and the fact that Mig 29's can only fly in three directions left, right and down. Moving the stick backwards has no affect which is why they look up with envy when they pass underneath A10's wondering what it must be like to fly at such altitudes of 50m .. ;)..

 

This should really be a poll because, as we all know, scientifically they're more accurate :D .

As you say I was generalizing :) . Most V-pilots don't want to think they have it easy but then again they don't want anyone running down their favorite fighter either. ;)..

Now we are talking a bit more sens the first cute picture is unreadable.. this one is for teh F15 vs SU-27 but still to get a goof look at performance you need much more than this..

The real one is, at least when it comes to BVR - compared to something like an F-15 or modern F-16. It has some advantage in WVR due to maneuver and HMS and R-73, but it's 'pilot v pilot' at this point.

Newer versions of the MiG starting with SMT have a better radar antenna and processor, and thus behave better.

 

In LOMAC, none of this is simulated.

Instead, the MiG has a LOD which you cannot see at long range (while it can see other planes 16nm away!), its radar has no problems at all, and the S version carries what is arguably the best missile payload in the game (in terms of effectiveness). It also has the best TWR and MIL power cruising speed, which at least for the latter is wrong.

 

Another issue is also that the way missions are setup, MiGs only have to fly a short range which basically takes away the need to manage fuel.
