secretcode Posted November 19, 2020 Posted November 19, 2020 With the most recent update now we have the following GBU-31: GBU-31 (V) 1/B GBU-31 (V) 2/B GBU-31 (V) 3/B GBU-31 (V) 4/B I would like to know what are the differences between all of them. The 3/B and 4/B have a different shape and if I am not mistaken they are used to penetrate bunkers but still, why do we have 2 of them ? Would be nice if some could point out when should we use one or another.
KlarSnow Posted November 19, 2020 Posted November 19, 2020 V1 is a Mk 84 bomb body, V2 is a Mk-84 bomb body, but with the grey navy thermal coating to keep it from cooking off on a ship in case of a fire V3 is a BLU-109 penetrator V4 is a BLU-109 penetrator, but with the grey navy thermal coating to keep it from cooking off on a ship in case of a fire The grey naval thermal coating textures are not currently implemented in game. So in effect there is no difference in game right now between a V1/V2 or a V3/V4 other than the name. 3
secretcode Posted November 19, 2020 Author Posted November 19, 2020 Thank you so much for the response! This will help me a lot. I like to make notes and write what is each variant of a weapon for.
Ziptie Posted November 19, 2020 Posted November 19, 2020 I found that the V1 and V2 fell short each time I tried to employ them (2x each respectively), where the V3 and V4 hit their target each time I tried to employ them (2x each respectively). It's almost as if the V1 and V2 fell with a traditional Mk84 "dumb bomb" free fall, even though coordinates were entered via PP mode each time. I did not know the information that @KlarSnow stated above, in regards to the thermal coatings that will hopefully make it into DCS eventually. I did observe the V1 and V2 being a Mk84 casing with the guidance kit attached, where as the V3 and V4 have the penetrator casing (so to speak) as you and Klar both stated. KlarSnow Posted November 19, 2020 Posted November 19, 2020 GBU-31v1 GBU-31v2 GBU-31v3 GBU-31v4 There are 2 different versions of the BLU-109 penetrator bomb body, I think thats what you are seeing in the difference of the v3 and v4 up there, the one with the flared out rear end, and the one without. The angle on the v4 is not great so I cant tell which one it is. In effect still the same bomb. and would still be annotated as a v3 or v4. Some quick googling will usually serve you well with this kinda stuff btw http://www.designation-systems.net/dusrm/app5/jdam.html 1
Subferro Posted November 19, 2020 Posted November 19, 2020 The grey naval thermal coating textures are not currently implemented in game. So in effect there is no difference in game right now between a V1/V2 or a V3/V4 other than the name. Thank you for including this part. Everyone keeps posting thermal protection this, grey skin that... and I’m here looking at very green bombs. Glad to know I didn’t miss something with the update
