Dear people of ED Forums,

 

I come to you for a little help regarding the HOTAS controls and functionality of AGM-65F. I tried asking on reddit beforehand, but I was just downvoted to oblivion, still have no idea why. 

 

I gave Chuck's guide and various YouTube videos a try, but no avail. I just can't get the IRMVs to lock on a target. If I press TDC Action as stated in tutorials, it just slaves the sensor to boresight even though I was already in range. 

 

Is there a foolproof way to use IRMVs and learn HOTAS logic of the Harrier. Compared to A-10C and F-16 it's not intuitive or even useful in the slightest bit.

Why don’t you include a track showing us your procedures right up to the point of trying to get a lock, that’ll give us a better understanding of whats gone wrong.

So it depends on how you are using the Maverick. I just did a quick test using Methods 1 and 2

 

1- Using Maverick Sensor ALONE:

 

Select IR MAV.. Wait until RDY. UNCAGE. Sensor Select Switch UP so IRMAV shows in the Mav Video

Slew to your desired target. Should automatically snap to a target with sufficient contrast and LOCK (brackets collapse) when IN RANGE.

 

2- Using DMT or TPOD:  If using a WP to get the sensor close to the target, hit DESG on the EHSD. Then slew the sensor appropriately to get to the target.

Select IR MAV. Wait until RDY. UNCAGE. Sensor Select Switch UP so IRMAV shows in the MAV Video. Mav should be pointing at the target from the other sensor.  TDC DEPRESS to lock up the MAV (or you can try slewing slightly.  Often the brackets won't collapse to a lock until well in range.

 

3- Using DMT or TPOD to select a target by pointing the Velocity Vector or slewing the HUD indicator.  Same as above, but remember to box DESG on the EHSD (I THINK this is needed to get the target selected as the SYSTEM DESIGNATION for handoff).
