Hi,

I have a i7 6800K. The multiplier for 3-6 active cores is 40x and for 1-2 active cores is 44x. Base frequency is 100MHz.

Now, when running DCS or another single thread app, the reported active core count is 1 and sometimes 2, never more. However, the "Max Core Frequency" reported by XTU is 4.00GHz, not 4.40GHz.

Do you know what could be the cause?

Thanks!

Hi galinette,

IIRC, DCS 2.5.6 uses two and half cores, not just two.

You also must add to that the constant tendency of Windows to move threads from core to core, trying to keep each core equally loaded.

If you bring up something* that can monitor invidual cores utilization in game, you'll notice it - and that's why it's not always running (sometimes not at all) the Max frequency (or "Turbo Boost") usually seen with supposed single/dual core applications, instead using the base clock frequency.

You can try setting the processor affinity on the DCS.EXE (through the task manager, for example) for specific cores and see how it goes, though I doubt it'll be better.

As a side note, and you may know it already, that's one reason why people tend to go for an all-core overclocking (clocks as high as possible), as it mitigates that issue.

But then it creates other issues, such as much higher Wattage consumption and a lot more heat generated (in the processor and motherboard socket + VRMs).

Yours is a nice processor but on that one don't try it unless you're using water cooling.

* MSI Afterburner, EVGA Precision, HWInfo (among others), when paired with RivaTuner Statistics, can bring up that kind of information in OSD.
