I've been thinking of that too. Point that's going to be interesting: the Apache MFDs look to have 6 buttons per side, unlike the Cougar MFD's 5 buttons. That's going to make binding a pain in the ass.

May be you could use old Quick Shot Masterpilots and use other Electronics like an Arcaze, Pokeys or Arduino board. If you live in the US they are still sold sometimes on ebay. Here in the EU it's very hard to get them. You have to remove the lower part from them. But it's not an easy task, cause the Masterpilot has softtouch buttons and six of them are each connected to four longish PCB's arround the MFD in the frame. You have to cut some of the connections from the buttons at the PCB and solder wires directly or to fidle out the logic from the boards and use something like a shift register or matrix to connect them to one of the above mentioned USB controller boards. You also have to add the additional buttons the Apache MFD's have and if you want to use them in front of a TFT-monitor, you also have to cut out the MFD frame (no great problem, I have still four of them and already did this cutout on all of them).

At the moment I'm doing all the other controls for my pit, but I have also planed to make the MFD's and maybe the TEDAC of the AH-64D at a later time. I take the old Masterpilots I have in account to use them, but I'm also not sure if it's more work to convert them, as to build new 3D printed ones that really match the original MFD's.

To those who are concerned about the autopilot, it's very similar to a 2-axis stability augmentation system. It won't be full AP like you'd see on a civilian airliner. I am not sure about the position hold/hover. I wasn't an Army aviator.

I read the following concerning the D-Model, if this is implemented i who really help when flying solo:

"An enhanced autopilot with attitude, altitude and position hold in hover takes the effort out of NOE "masked" hover behind covering terrain."
