Seaeagle Posted March 14, 2021 Posted March 14, 2021 I am not sure about DCS, but the real missile's ARH seeker can acquire a target of RCS=5m2 at around 16 km. 1
BlackPixxel Posted March 14, 2021 Posted March 14, 2021 In DCS it is pretty much this 16 km, for most if not all active missiles. 1

ARH disregard target aspect and height so overperform on low cold targets for sure and have a bug that they can even track a stopped target on the ground... ------- All the people keep asking for capabilities to be modelled.... I want the limitations to be modelled.... limitations make for realistic simulation. Arguing with an engineer is like wrestling with a pig in the mud, after a bit you realize the pig likes it. Sure but I was only refering to the specific question of the OP - "pitbull range" of the R-77.
dundun92 Posted March 16, 2021 Posted March 16, 2021 Hate to be that guy, but in DCS its 15 not 16km. 16km is the stated IRL range vs 5m^2 (presumably head-on). Eagle Enthusiast, Fresco Fan. IxIFelIxI Posted June 17, 2023 Posted June 17, 2023 Somewhere in F15 manual I found that amraam will hone in on a target (goes pitbull) that provides the fastest signal return of the amraam's radar and not the launching aircraft radar, IF the amraam is launched in enemy's general direction without a lock. So I began experimenting with R77 basically launching it in enemy's direction without a lock and even without the plane's radar on. My findings are that R77 indeed goes pitbull on an enemy aircraft without any sort of guidance from the MiG if launched within 16 km of the enemy. However, If launched lets say at 25 km of the enemy but prior to Rmax it never goes pitbull when it reaches that 16 km threshold. Observing this behavior I started wondering how does R77 know it is within 16 km pitbull range (Mig's radar off)? Is the pitbull mode time dependent? Meaning it only scans in front of itself for a limited amount of time and then goes dumb if it does not see anything?
GGTharos Posted June 17, 2023 Posted June 17, 2023 (edited) It doesn't know, it just turns on its radar when you launch it and either finds something or it doesn't. Who knows why (or if) it shuts down IRL if it doesn't find anything? But in-game it does, and this is exactly in line with how emergency modes are to be used: visual range only, ie. you shoot at something you can see.
