Wingman Commands (attack my target)

Does anyone know when using the command for a wingman to engage and attack my target how exactly do I specify my target? What if my radar is off and there are a couple bogeys in formation. Is my target where the center of my pipper is?

 I too would like to know how "my target" is decided. Same question applies when flying other planes too - like the Spitfire, for example.
