Ok, the Phoenix is pretty much a beast, it's one of the things that DCS gets accurate. But the B model still had the original radar. It was basically unusable over land. Is that done?

bio (cat pilot)

Low PRF (known in the AWG-9 as Pulse): Measures target range. Good for precise range measurement. Not good for look down due to ground clutter

Also if you allow player to save and write the assembly code for the awg 9  it will be the best sim ever.

OMG.  How is this LEGITIMATE?   The AWG-9 has a PD mode to deal with ground clutter.

Do we know the details? F 15 was set to ignore anything below 70mph on the autobahn.

I don't, but I'm sure someone does.  A 100kt notch gate would not be unusual.

The F-15 has a switch for setting the notch gate that has nothing to do with the autobahn.  Seriously, quit posting 'issues' stemming from little tidbids you read on random websites.

Understand that you very obviously know nothing, and based on that stop making bug reports about technical things that you do not understand.  Ask questions about things you don't know.

So then helicopters are invisible.

From this forum

As I understand it, a variable velocity gate was introduced at least partly so that F-15's stationed in Germany would stop getting locks on Autobahn traffic 🙂

They shouldn't be, but they are in DCS.  The rotor always presents a lot of closure when it's moving at speed, even if the heli is sitting on the ground.   This particular subject isn't simple because of the way radars would handle the multiple doppler shifts is presents (the radial speed is different along the length of the blade and also dependent on the angle of the blade at that exact moment).

Doppler shift basically gives you a speed that is the parallel component to the radar beam ... of the blade's velocity vector.

That's interesting. Dcs got it right thanks.

And I get the vector problem but the blades are probably barley any RCS.

Well, you understand wrong.  😄

The variable velocity gate is tuned to provide specific false target rate performance for a given PRF and it is a trade-off that the pilot will be trained on and aware of.  It has nothing to do with any autobahn anywhere, but it's a fun anecdote/joke.  😄

DCS got it wrong.  The relevant rotor RCS is as small/large as 2m^2 and that's for composite rotors.  That means an F-15 or F-14 would easily see them at 40-50nm, which has happened in real combat 🙂

They usually have AWACS which does proper signal processing and not Doppler. Also I don't think there was ever a BVR helicopter kill (the UH 60 incident was WVR)

Oh, so wrong again.  Actually doppler is 'proper signal processing', it's one of the tools in the box.  Also, AWACS only recently received upgrades to be able to deal with heli rotors.

You know the F-15E that bombed a heli 'in the air'?   These guys picked up the heli from 50nm away while it was sitting on the ground, in the air to air mode of the radar.  They never dropped track and they never switched the radar out of A/A.

They slaved the pod to the radar initially for identification prurpose and they were considering using a sidewinder but when they saw on the pod that it was sitting on the ground, they decided to use an LGB.   The heli took off while the LGB was in flight.

We are not doing this again @Mistang, I am sorry. From now on please inform yourself first, or at the least ask a question and do not make assumptions of things you clearly do not understand.

Not a legitimate issue. You will also find most of your questions answered here:
