Autopilot reference button problem

sometimes it does not work. Especially when I first select HDG switch, then ALT switch and after that I press A/P ref button. A/P ref light does not switch off.

You forgot AP ENGAGE and of course "ALT Hold will now engage only if within +/- 200FPM vertical speed. "

I engaged autopilot before alt hold. I will check 200 fpm limitation today. I am not sure if I was in this limit
