WWII Gunsight? Info request.

I was given a box of optics/spectroscope parts etc from a uni professor friend on their retirement.

 

This gunsight was in the box and I hope someone could shed light on it's date, use etc. It has 01272 stamped under the optic on the front.

This seems to be a Model used on P-47, P-38 etc..

Thanks for the great diagram and aircraft it was used on!

 

This sent me down a google rabbit hole and discovered a large number of these gun sights were surplus by 1945 and bought up by optics engineers and science outfits to use as collimators in various science equipment. This explains why my friend had this in a box of spectroscope parts.
