heloguy Posted September 19, 2021 Posted September 19, 2021 I've been trying to understand this. My brain doesn't really think in Russian, I guess. Manual mode for heading and track on the HSI are self-explanatory I guess, but for the life of me, what are the desired heading/track indicators telling me on the HSI in the auto mode? The heading bug seems to point to whatever point I select on the PVI-800, but I can't tell what the track indicator is telling me. Sometimes it seems to be telling me which way to turn to get back on course, and other times, it looks like if I followed it, I would move further off the flight-plan course. i9 12900k @ 4.9ghz, 64gb RAM Nvidia RTX 3090 Windows 11 x64 Pimax Crystal VP Force Rhino w/RS F16GRH, Virpil TCS Rotor Plus AH-64 Collective, BRD F1 Pedals, WH Throttle, FSSB R3 w/WH Grip, PointCTRL v2
Frederf Posted September 19, 2021 Posted September 19, 2021 Track needle works for PVI waypoint routes on a previous-to-current basis. If there is no logical previous waypoint (first WPT in route, airfield, navtgt, etc.) then it just shows north. This is also true if DH-DT switch is in the middle position. The indication of the white needle is solely calculated based on the positions of the waypoints. You are on the line connecting previous-to-current points (i.e. on track) when the bearing to point (yellow bug) and course to point (white needle) are aligned. For example if bug is at 170 and needle is pointing 180 then you are west of the course line. To get back onto the track you would have to fly easterly until the bearing to point was 180. You don't follow the pointing of the white needle but instead learn what your course should be between the given points.
heloguy Posted September 19, 2021 Author Posted September 19, 2021 Ok, thanks. Sounds like basic instrument stuff (push the head of the needle, pull the tail of the needle). I think I probably haven't had the DH-DT switch in the right position, so it wasn't behaving like I thought it should. i9 12900k @ 4.9ghz, 64gb RAM Nvidia RTX 3090 Windows 11 x64 Pimax Crystal VP Force Rhino w/RS F16GRH, Virpil TCS Rotor Plus AH-64 Collective, BRD F1 Pedals, WH Throttle, FSSB R3 w/WH Grip, PointCTRL v2
heloguy Posted September 19, 2021 Author Posted September 19, 2021 Does the PVI-800 draw a new track line from your present position every time you select a waypoint, or is it always going to use the track from the flight plan? i9 12900k @ 4.9ghz, 64gb RAM Nvidia RTX 3090 Windows 11 x64 Pimax Crystal VP Force Rhino w/RS F16GRH, Virpil TCS Rotor Plus AH-64 Collective, BRD F1 Pedals, WH Throttle, FSSB R3 w/WH Grip, PointCTRL v2
Frederf Posted September 20, 2021 Posted September 20, 2021 The sequence of waypoints in the flight plan route is defined (1-2-3-4-5-6 by default) but this can be changed in the cockpit if desired. The previous point for track line purposes is always the one which is N-1 in the saved sequence, not the one which was selected most recently.
