Engine Fire Extinguishers Not Functional

I have tried using the fire extinguishers on multiple occasions when I had an engine fire. Every time (out of about 20 tries), using the fire extinguisher buttons did nothing. 

 

The extinguishers are supposed to automatically engage when crash landing... but I have never seen them work properly in that scenario either.
