I could think the same about WW 2 propelers or Korea & Vietnam War jets, but i don't, as I realise they just aren't my cup of tea...

 

Actually it is very useful - its HUD displays navigation and weapons employment symbology, in the best possible way available when it appeared.

I believe only with the arrival of the F-15 Eagle did HUDs got more of a modern "digitalized" kind of symbology... but since then eveything looks prety much the same.

 

Regarding the F-14's cockpit ergonomics, you should compare it with USSR's jets of the same era... those were 'confusing'.
