Raven One - Plane randomly blowing up during training

I am encountering a very strange issue while playing the first mission of the Raven One campaign. It has happened twice that my plane has been killed during the training section, the one with the test AIM9 and the SIM GUN. First time my plane just disappeared and I was booted back to spectators, with no kill in the debriefing log. Second time, after "shooting" with my gun, my plane lost both wings during level flight. Again, no discernible cause in the debriefing log.

I ended up skipping the mission because I honestly can't be arsed to do it a third time to see my F18 blow up once again with no apparent cause, however I would like to know what is going on.
