zxcvb Posted December 22, 2021 Posted December 22, 2021 Hello all, I 'm testing TDA7498 100 watt class D amplifier. I had a question that relates to Class D. I'm thinking about buying a Class D solid state guitar amplifier, but I heard that Class D amps lose a lot of their power (more than Class A or A/B amps do) when they drive speakers above 4 ohms, and my speaker happens to be 8 ohms. Is this so? If it is, the high watts the amp manufacturer claims for the amp don't seem as impressive.
Mr_sukebe Posted December 22, 2021 Posted December 22, 2021 My guess is that the comments were aimed at the "current/drive" capability of the amp. As impedance drops, current requirements go up as it's inversely related. So for example, when you go from a speaker of 8ohms to 4ohms, you need twice the current. In your case, you're doubling the impedance, if anything making the load easier. So I can't imagine you having an issue. 7800x3d, 5080, 64GB, PCIE5 SSD - Oculus Pro - Moza (AB9), Virpil (Alpha, CM3, CM1 and CM2), WW (TOP and CP), TM (MFDs, Pendular Rudder), Tek Creations (F18 panel), Total Controls (Apache MFD), Jetseat
