Hi,

I'm reading the AJ 37 del 2 Kap 1 manual in order to get a better understanding, of how the AKAN works in reality .

On page 81 of the document (thats page 83 of the PDF) there is a schematic, showing the calculation factors that go into the gunsight.
On the lower part of the diagramm is a 3 position switch that seems to determine the distance-constant value for the calculation.
Does anyone know where this switch is located on the aircraft? Is it somewhere in the cockpit or under a panel accessible to the ground crew.

Side question, since I don't speak swedish and am only very slowly working my way through the original manuals via translating, has anyone found something in the manual about the convergence value for the gunpods, i . e. at which distance the rounds meet, or how many degrees the gunpods are canted inwards?

It seems strange that there is a noticable empty bracket between the points where the bullets end , even after quite a distance from being fired.

Thanks a lot , kind regards,

Snappy.

It's in one of the ground crew accessible panels on the outside, I think on the right side (see image).

From what I remember there is nothing about convergence on the guns mentioned anywhere.

Also, the diagram in that image is quite different from the AJS's. There's a fair bit more calculations/parameters going on in that one compared to the AJ.

Hi MYSE,

ah interesting, thank you a very much for the info&the picture of the external access panel. Too bad there's no data on the convergence. Would be awesome if some SME Pilot or Armorer still had the data or

could talk from experience.

Kind regards,

Under the switch it says “Säk Avst”, that could be “Säkerhets Avstånd” and would be “Safe distance”.
It also could be “Säkrings Avstånd” sort of ”Arming distance”

It's the first one, "säkerhetsavstånd". The ballistics calculation for akan/arak isn't CCIP; the aim point on the HUD is only intended to be accurate at a specific distance from the target, at which point the firing cue is given. That distance should be as short as possible, to allow for maximum accuracy, but if it's too short you risk getting hit by shrapnel from your own weapons. That switch allows you to configure essentially how quick you think you're gonna be on the pullup after firing. RagnarDa explained how it works a long time ago.
