But he's right, that part of your post was pretty weak. The rest I was able to agree with. There is a viable theory that air combat, due to ever-expanding ECM/ECCM, will return to more WVR engagement, where the gun becomes a very useful standby. Imagine the development of a CM device that can (finally) effectively spoil IR missiles using a laser. The idea being... prepare for every eventuality. The choice made for the F-35, however, follows the more realistic scenario for the foreseeable future.

Hajduk- Of course it wasn't meant for me, I just went after it. :D I understand it's meant for GG, but that doesn't make it any less false in my mind. Cheers.

Went through my pics and i'm pretty sure there is where the internal gun is on the F-35A model: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/17/f35gun.jpg/f35gun.jpg

AFAIK, that is the gun bay vent, the gun is on the other side.

To whom it may concern,

I am an idiot, unfortunately for the world, I have a internet connection and a fondness for beer....apologies for that.

Thank you for you patience.

...and I'd totally be there with a camera to make the awesome moment live eternal. :D

Anyways, unless you aim your guns with an iron sight, you are still vulnerable because you rely on those sensors to pain the pipper in the right plane on your HUD. If it is tricked and paints it in the wrong place, a nice and clean tracking shot actually doesn't hit much of anything - because it got the wrong deflection.

So yeah, in modern combat - guns are vulnerable too. (HOW vulnerable I wouldn't know, and I doubt anyone here both knows AND has clearance to tell the public. :P ) But if you're flying a P-51 you are of course unaffected. :)

Great pics. I'm not sure about the lack if analog instruments as backups though. Maybe they think the chances of engine+APU or whatever it uses both quitting at the same time are small enough it's ok.

Always remember. I don't have a clue what I'm doing

Hey, those control sticks - where they made by Logitech? *ducks*

I don't think so, these actually look ergonomic. ;)

Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two.

It's a mock-up. Not much use for analog backup if displays are ten times as reliable as an analog instrument, anyway.

You can often find nice photos on the official US Defence Department pages for each force. As I understand it the photos are in the public domain, thanks to the generosity of the US taxpayer.

USN

Look for F-35 shots in the USAF and USN pages (amongst the other goodies).

Enjoy.
