Pzkfw Posted May 10, 2022 Posted May 10, 2022 What is the likelihood of an F-86 intercepting a target with the following conditions? Target doing Mach 0.88 at 5km alt, straight and level. F-86 at 1km altitude 10km distant, carrying Aim-9. AKA Venturi "You can tell a bomber pilot by the spread across his rear, and by the ring around his eye, you can tell a bombadier; You can tell a navigator by his maps and charts and such, and you can tell a fighter pilot - but you can't tell him much!" -523 TFS Fighter Pilots Song Book
TLTeo Posted May 10, 2022 Posted May 10, 2022 It would depend on relative heading too, but if the target is at 5km with the right geometry it might be doable (although being 10km apart only greatly complicates things - the Sabre isn't going to point its nose up and climb like an afterburning jet would). It gets really tricky if they are transonic at 30k ft or above though. 1
Pzkfw Posted May 10, 2022 Author Posted May 10, 2022 Yea, so that sounds like a "no". What's the max speed of a F-86 at 5km? That's assuming this same configuration: 5 hours ago, Pzkfw said: F-86 at 1km altitude 10km distant, carrying Aim-9. It's on page 289 of the manual. 1

From other angles it becomes progressively harder to impossible. This really isn't an aircraft performance question as much as it is basic intercept technique. 2
