NightsEye Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 (edited) I appear to have a similar problem to many other people here. after much anticipation waiting for this sim to be released, i have downloaded and installed just now, only to find i get a Runtime error when trying to get anywhere. The GUI works fine, but when selecting a training mission, for example, i am dumped back to my desktop and get this error i then close this and the GUI starts up again. No matter what i select mission-wise this happens. I have tried reducing the resolution and even set it to Low in the graphics options. I am on a Dell XPS 720 Quad Core with Vista Home Premium 32bit with nvidia geforce 8800 GTX and latest drivers 181.00, 4gb Ram and a Creative SB X-Fi i don't get a crash log in my game Temp folder, but this is the information i get in my Vista Problem Report: Problem signature Problem Event Name: APPCRASH Application Name: dcs.exe Application Version: 1.0.0.0 Application Timestamp: 493d3989 Fault Module Name: protect.dll Fault Module Version: 5.60.2.1 Fault Module Timestamp: 493d3fc0 Exception Code: 40000015 Exception Offset: 01406b44 OS Version: 6.0.6001.2.1.0.768.3 Locale ID: 2057 Additional Information 1: a919 Additional Information 2: ffef5daa5bce66bbafb2a49c03f13ef6 Additional Information 3: 8ac2 Additional Information 4: f57d2ee580a3f5f6e2fd20466b0a8dbe this is the info when running the software without the -console parameter locale: en EN removing ./../Temp/tempMission.miz running instant mission ./../Missions/QuickStart/Ka-50_arcade.miz ./../Temp/tempMission.miz saved Launch command: C:\Program Files\Eagle Dynamics\Ka-50\bin\stable\dcs.exe "C:\Program Files\Eagle Dynamics\Ka-50\bin\stable\dcs.exe" --noreplay --trackfile BlackShark/./../Temp/ LastMissionTrack.trk "BlackShark/./../Temp/tempMission.miz" waiting for simulator to terminate... simulator terminated locale: en EN Mission ./../Temp/tempMission.miz loaded Debriefing file ./../temp/debrief.log error If i try running multiplayer it just crashes straight to the same runtime error. I am extremely sad as i was hoping to have some fun with this over Christmas. I hope someone can help me out :helpsmilie: Thanks Dom Edited December 23, 2008 by NightsEye
NightsEye Posted December 26, 2008 Author Posted December 26, 2008 I have tried re-downloading the setup.exe from the Russian Mirror (mentioned in another thread) disabled Norton 360 Uninstalled and re-installed Still No Joy! I have tried using older graphics drivers - No Joy! I have trawled through this froum to try and find other things to try, I have tried everything! I have absolutely no idea what causes this runtime error, but there seem to be quite a few of us here with the same problem. beginning to get really p**sed off! looking at the Vista report in my post above there is mention of a fault in module protect.dll ... that's not somethng to do with the copy protection is it? That would be just typical!!! if it is, how will i ever get this to work on my system? I don't want to have to ask for my money back, as i want to support the developers of flight sims like this, but if i can't get this to run then i'll have no choice. anyone........any ideas? Dom
CE_Mikemonster Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 I'm certainly no expert whatsoever but seeing as there's been no other replies I hope you don't mind me jogging your mind a bit with any suggestions. Have you Activated Starforce? Too many cowboys. Not enough indians. GO APE SH*T
NightsEye Posted January 5, 2009 Author Posted January 5, 2009 Hi thanks for the reply  Yup - I have activated Black Shark which says it was successful (sorry should have mentioned that in my post)... or do i need to do something special to activate StarForce itself?
ED Team Groove Posted January 5, 2009 ED Team Posted January 5, 2009 Please try to re-download SF drivers. http://www.star-force.com/support/drivers/ Our Forum Rules: http://forums.eagle.ru/rules.php#en
NightsEye Posted January 5, 2009 Author Posted January 5, 2009 thanks :) I thought about trying that, but when using protect.exe I only see the last two options of the GUI. I don't have any of the driver management commands as shown on that site. do you know how I get those?
NightsEye Posted January 5, 2009 Author Posted January 5, 2009 haha:megalol: not quite that desperate yet. Cheers :music_whistling:
Swebeast Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 (edited) I have the same error. Help appreciated. Edited January 5, 2009 by Swebeast
ED Team Groove Posted January 5, 2009 ED Team Posted January 5, 2009 Did you tried a reinstall ? Our Forum Rules: http://forums.eagle.ru/rules.php#en
NightsEye Posted January 5, 2009 Author Posted January 5, 2009 i have tried about 6 or 7 un-installs and installs using the downloads from each of the mirrors provided. but have exactly the same error each time i try and start a "mission" or track from the main GUI as described previously:(
Swebeast Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 I get my error after the mission is flown; right before mission debriefing. I click OK and everything is normal again, no CTD or other fault. Come to think of it....it isn't really a problem then :)
NightsEye Posted January 6, 2009 Author Posted January 6, 2009 any more suggestions? Are the Devs back from hols yet?
ED Team Groove Posted January 6, 2009 ED Team Posted January 6, 2009 Did you tried to contact star force support? Our Forum Rules: http://forums.eagle.ru/rules.php#en
NightsEye Posted January 6, 2009 Author Posted January 6, 2009 Hi yup. tried contacting StarForce support a few days ago, but not had a reply yet. I guess they're busy with all the problems they've caused :smilewink:
ED Team Groove Posted January 6, 2009 ED Team Posted January 6, 2009 Or it's Christmas Time in russia ;) Our Forum Rules: http://forums.eagle.ru/rules.php#en
ED Team Groove Posted January 6, 2009 ED Team Posted January 6, 2009 Did you installed the game "as administrator" ? Our Forum Rules: http://forums.eagle.ru/rules.php#en
ZaltysZ Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 (edited) Do you have some "irregular" software running? Maybe a debugger? Or some invasive system scanner/monitor? Edited January 6, 2009 by ZaltysZ Wir sehen uns in Walhalla.
NightsEye Posted January 6, 2009 Author Posted January 6, 2009 Yes :) I have myself set as admin anyway and have the UAC disabled
NightsEye Posted January 6, 2009 Author Posted January 6, 2009 Do you have some "irregular" software running? Maybe a debugger? Or some invasive system scanner/monitor? Hi thanks for joining in :) I still get the same problem even when disabling non essential processes.
ZaltysZ Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 It might be that protect.dll is protecting itself. Why a crash and not pop up error? Well, that is standard method of defense against debuggers. I still think, that there is software conflict on your system. Can you make a list of installed software you have? Wir sehen uns in Walhalla.
NightsEye Posted January 6, 2009 Author Posted January 6, 2009 i do get a pop up error. :) see my first post. I'm not about to list all my software, I'm not at home anyway. I have essentially run it with no other services running other than microsoft essential ones for Vista. I can only assume there is a problem with the StarForce driver, which i can't install seperately or get it to update. My error states there is a fault with Starforce. what if i was sent the protect.dll and protect.exe from a PC that it works on? or is the activation coded into them already? or is it the dcs.exe i need?
ZaltysZ Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 (edited) You get generic crash dialog which is showed by system and not by program itself. The exception number is also generic and suitable for "unknown" exceptions. If you have killed unnecessary processes, it doesn't mean that something "evil" isn't running still. Some services run under system processes, some even as drivers. Programs tend to install lots of stuff silently. A month ago my computer was freezing frequently while playing IL2 for prolonged sessions, I fought that was a heat issue, however it wasn't. CDROM filter driver pfc.sys (made by Padus) was crashing whole system. I didn't even know I had it (never installed). Probably it was bundled with other software (maybe DVD player). I have removed it by editing registry and problem dissappeared. This example just shows how strange the reasons for problems can be. I don't have English downloadable version, so my files won't be useful for you. Maybe someone else can provide them. By the way, you may get no button "Update driver", because downloadable version doesn't install any drivers at all. Edited January 6, 2009 by ZaltysZ Wir sehen uns in Walhalla.
NightsEye Posted January 6, 2009 Author Posted January 6, 2009 I could spend months searching through the registry for an obscure entry. I guess i'll have to try a full clean reinstall of Vista to see if that fixes the problem. It's the only thing i haven't tried Not something i'll be happy about as i'll have loads to re-install. everything else works perfectly. then again it will probably do my PC some good in the process. :) better get backing up then. could take a while. if it still has a problem i'll be very annoyed. not at you though
Ulrich Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 Try cleaning your OS from codecs and codec packs.
