jetski Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 I have just downloaded both files from both the USA (1) and RU (2) mirrors and, checking the MD5 values against those posted, I get a difference.:( the values posted on the download site are File name: setup.exe File size: 1.31 GB MD5: b097066f30001c596f576d3f3c850cc1 and File name: data1.cab File size: 897.4 MB MD5: dc721fc2d8730c1bdd5621bcaf8d92e3 What I get is: ada611ee9181d39d3ae370c1cfe3f5e0 *data1.cab 7484d06a9cfe7ffe6048e9dd0c17280f *setup.exe Please can ED explin? I'm VERY reluctant to proceed with an install of unverified files:cry: Jetski
BTTW-DratsaB Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 Corrupt memory can cause MD5 hash changes when transferring a file to your computer. Run memtest86 or if your on vista, run vista's own memory test before booting. Specs: GA-Z87X-UD3H, i7-4770k, 16GB, RTX2060, SB AE-5, 750watt Corsair PSU, X52, Track IR4, Win10x64. Mugatu Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 You'll probably fail the install, took me 3 downloads to get the right checksum.
jetski Posted December 27, 2008 Author Posted December 27, 2008 Thanks for the advice, I'll try again a few times and if that fails, I'll break out memtest86 and give that a go. Don't think it's Memory, as I have never had MD5 issues with downloads before. (and my system is currently stable (touch wood) I run XP SP3, not Vista. Corrupt downloads seem more likely, but weirdly both times I downloaded setup.exe, I got the SAME MD5 hash, and I'd have thought the chances of corruption causing that would be millions to one against, My therry was that either ED have updated the download files and not the MD5 values or somat else is amiss.
BTTW-DratsaB Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 Corrupt downloads seem more likely, but weirdly both times I downloaded setup.exe, I got the SAME MD5 hash, That is odd, most likely not memory related then Specs: GA-Z87X-UD3H, i7-4770k, 16GB, RTX2060, SB AE-5, 750watt Corsair PSU, X52, Track IR4, Win10x64. jetski Posted December 28, 2008 Author Posted December 28, 2008 Ok, after a manual virus check, I bit the bullet and tried to install, and... it workes fine! I have just gone through the first training missions! So I guess ED did update the files?? - or they are using a different MD5 calculation?! (endian-wise?)
Mugatu Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 Could be, I used the ms one to verify http://support.microsoft.com/kb/841290. 1
Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 Use a download manager to download it. You can get a good one for free at http://www.getright.com
jetski Posted December 29, 2008 Author Posted December 29, 2008 Hi Mugatu Sorted! The problem seems to have been my old version of MD5 summer...( http://www.md5summer.org/ ) the new 1.2011 beta calculates the proper values, as does the MS utility you recommended. (so the files WERE good all along!) Many Thanks, Jetski
